First of the Persian peltasts/skirmishers for the army. Turned out well, although perhaps a black outline on the shield design would have helped a bit?

So many dots! I think these figures work pretty well as peltasts/skirmisher types.

Overall I'm pretty happy with this figure. The Persions of this era are always depicted in bright colours, and my goal was to capture that.

This was an interesting one to paint. At first I simply put the red and green lines directly on to the golden-yellow tunic. But then I realized that the colours weren't quite differentiated enough, so I added in the white outline. The outline definitely improved things, but I'm not sure it's perfect... Overall though, I'm happy with this one.

Big polka-dots!

The whole group of five together, ready to harass those Greek Hoplites!

The completed unit of ancient Persian kardakes. I went with a solid scheme for the pavises; I wanted to make a cohesive unit and I liked the simple geometric pattern. I think next time I'll simply turn the shields around so I don't have to deal with the sculpted-on designs, since they are pretty tough to figure out what to do with paint-wise...

The side view shows that these guys have recently come under fire themselves, but no casualties yet.

The back shows a great balance between uniformity and variance in this army. I'm pretty happy with it. It's the kind of unit that doesn't get missed on the tabletop.

The other side view. I tried to show off my favourite paint schemes on the outside of the unit, and the red-blue-yellow squares fig is one of my favourites.

Another front view... Note how the one shield bearer is holding his shield slightly open to give himself more room to attack? I guarontee that he'll be the first to die, the fool! Fight over the bloody shield, never open up!

Battle comences between my Wargames Factory Persians and their Warlord Games (formerly Immortal Miniatures) hoplites. From this distance I think they look okay... but in reality the Immortal Miniatures hoplites are fairly small in the 28mm scale of things. The Victrix and Wargames Factory figs are much more reasonably large.

It's pretty obvious here that the Wargames Factory figs are larger than the Warlord Games hoplites.

Here's a close up of the Persian banner. I'm pretty happy with it, but I've done more than a few of these already, so I should be happy with it by now :)

A close up of another Persian archer. I think it's great, but I think it would have been better if I had outlined the yellow designs in black.

This is easily one of my favourite figs in the entire unit. It probably took the longest to do as well!

This is the second reloading pose that I put together, and I think it worked better than the first one. O like the polka dots as well, I think they worked out pretty well over all. All of the deep folds in the cloth make it a bit harder though, but I imagine that makes these good for dipping though.

For this one I stuck with simply stripes in the standard historically influenced way. This one doesn't stand out so much on his own, but overall, will add to the unit well I think.

Quite happy with this figure. The red-outlined green stripe with dots isn't all that hard to do: Out down the red, then the green, then highlight both, clean up and mistakes using yellow paint, then put down a dot of dark yellow and then ivory in the middle, and blammo, done!

I was experimenting with the pose for this one. Given the limited options I had for arms and whatnot, I am pretty happy with it. The polka-dots didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped though, but they're still not too bad. I might bury this guy in the centre of the unit though. The one thing about these particular figs that I don't like is the bow and arrow holder; it has detail, but it's too tiny to paint or really even see, and it makes it difficult to paint different detail over top.

Another archer for the unit! More stripes and standard-looking uniform.

The banner bearer! Adding the black line between the colour blocks on the tunic there really makes them stand out. It's done by first putting down a black strip, then painting the colours over top, which is way easier than trying to add the black line later!

This one is modeled after a 15mm version that I painted. Quite happy with how it turned out!

In the place of honour beside the banner bearer, this is a classic Persian Immortal scheme. I imagine this guy just finished up hunting that Jaguar of the Persian steppe prior to joining the ranks of the army!

I've decided to get the shield bearers done before I dive back into archers. Here's a sneak peak of the back of the archer; I'll show the front once I've got the whole unit finished! I went with little dots here, but I'm not sure it creates a look that's all that great :) Still, I like it, but it almost looks more Arabic, less Ancient Persian.

The third archer is ready for the battlefield! The stripes are inspired by oh so many Osprey images of Persian immortals. The pose on this one is a bit crouched for an archer, but I think it still works if he's stretching the bowstring on his way up to shoot... but I should have put an arrow in there to make it more believable! Oh well, it'll work as is.

The second Persian archer ready to go! Two down, only another 16-18 more to go! I went with a less-intricate design philosophy here, but I'm still happy with it.

The first of my Persian infantry! These things take a long time to paint but I think they're worth it... I ccould take a little more time to blend the highlights, but then that would add even more time to these!
