Theodred, son of Theoden, King of Rohan used to be a special, hard to find fig when I picked this one up on eBay... You couldn't find him anywhere, and GW hadn't made a foot version either. So, naturally, he sits around collecting dust for two and a half years and somewhere in there GW releases a Theodred blister that includes a foot and mounted verstion. Anyway, this guy's armour is quite difficult to do well. It took me some time to get it right, and it does look better in person; the gold isn't so bright, and the highlights on the leather parts are easier to see. I'm pretty happy with this one, and I am looking forward to doing battle over the Fords of Isen soon!

Hama is a great character in the LotR movies and the book. I picked this one up on eBay a few years back when it was a special, hard to find fig... I guess this particular version of him is still hard to find... I need another one to convert into a rider though, as GW never made one! Mind you, I could just say the next fig in the gallery is mounted Hama, as they all look the same with their helmets on, don't they?

I alsways liked the Rohan Royal Guard figs. Basically these guys are the standing army, whereas all of the leather armoured riders are levies from the villages and communities scattered throughout Rohan. This guy's a captain, as he is wearing the blond horse hair plume on his helmet; your standard Royal Guard wears a black plume! To be honest though, I didn't realize the black plume thing until after I painted it blond ;) It works though!

So, this fig has an interesting story behind it. I painted the rider in the summer of 2006 because I needed an extra spear carrying rider. Because I didn't glue the riders to the horses, I didn't need to paint the horse... Of course, it sat around collecting dust (I had to wash it!) for two and a half years! So, compare the job on the horse to that of the rider and see how much my style/skill has changed (if at all!)! Incidentally, in the old LotR rules, one could dismount a horse and then remount later. In the current rules, as soon as a horse is dismounted, it runs away! And they said the Rohirrim were horse lords! Pah!

Eorl the Young mounted and leading the charge to battle! This project was a lot of work, time, and energy... But I think it turned out for the best. Some of my best freehand there, both on the shield and cloak.
