In answer to Warhammer's bloated, special-rules heavy scheme, Mantic decided to do their own rules set. But it actually starts before this... Mantic started producing plastic figures because they saw a market in the wake of Games Workshop's product's increasing price rises. Their figures were very successful in targeting the Warhammer market; Warhammer players started buying Mantic instead because it was cheaper and just as high quality.

So, enter Alessio Cavatore, who worked for GW for years and helped shape the Warhammer and Warhammer 40k games. He left GW for his own game development, and Mantic quickly scooped him up on contract to produce a fast-paced game that had the same tactical depth as Warhammer. Out of that came Kings of War.

It's simple, it's fast, and it's fun. I really like it, especially since it's simple and it gets rid of the fiddly movement and command rules of DBA and HotT. I highly recommend it! On top of that, it's absolutely free! Download it on Mantic's Gaming Pages.
