Celtic Cavalry  -  Posted: August 15th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The second troop of Celtic cavalry for my
Kings of War historical Marian Roman army. I put this one on an
appropriately sized single base for easy of use. I tried to make the shields pretty nifty, and I copied one of
the cavalry shields I used on my ancient British 15mm cavalry.

Celtic Cavalry  -  Posted: August 15th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Here's a close up of two of the cavalry warriors. In all honestly, I am quite frustrated with these figs; the
soft detail on the horses is a major barrier for painting enjoyment for me. Also their faces are somewhat challenging
for the same reason... I know there are some painters out there that can do wonders with these figs though. Still,
I am happy with these ones.

Celtic Cavalry  -  Posted: August 15th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The second two cavalry riders in close up. These guys should add the necessary punch to my
Kings of War Historical
Marian Roman army! I'm pretty happy with them.

Numidian Light Horse Cavalry  -  Posted: August 8th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
A second element of Numidian light horse. Technically, this fits the bill for DBA, but I painted
to make my previous DBA light horse element into a full
Kings of War Historical Ancient Combat
troop unit. I'm pretty happy with these conversions and the painting.

Numidian Light Cavalry  -  Posted: August 8th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The Numidian Light cavalry DBA elements joined to make a
Kings of War Historical Ancient Combat troop unit of Light Cavalry. These guys are very effective in
the game, and now that I have enough for a full troop, I don't have to use my centaurs to stand in
anymore!

Numidian Javelin man  -  Posted: August 8th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
A single Numidian javelin man ready for action. This one will bring my DBA element into the
Kings of War Historical Ancient Combat action by making its footprint big enough to be a troop
of skirmishers..

Here are the javelin men together, making up their skirmisher troop unit for
my Marian Roman army for

A single Numidian slinger to bring the second DBA psiloi element up to size to use it
as a troop of skirmishers for
Kings of War Historical Ancient Combat.

Celtic Cavalry  -  Posted: May 16th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
I'm getting the hang of building these figures, but they're still not perfect. The thing
about WF figures is that at first they are difficult to paint, especially the horses, and I'm sure
that they won't turn out well. But as the painting continues, they ook better and better... They are hard
to paint though, because the details are somewhat shallow.

Celtic Cavalry  -  Posted: May 16th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
I really like the character in the face of the guy on the left. These figures will either play the
role of 3Cv or 2LH in DBA, or as part of a troop or regiment of celtic cavalry mercenaries in Kings of
War historical ancient combat.

Celtic Cavalry  -  Posted: May 16th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
A close up of the characterful face. While painting these I'm never sure if they will turn out,
but in the end, I'm always satisfied.

Celtic Cavalry  -  Posted: May 16th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
A close up of the icon bearer and commander. The details on the helmets and banner are quite good...
Especially that helmet with the bird on it.

Celtic Cavalry  -  Posted: May 16th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
A close up of the shield design on the banner bearer. Honestly, I didn't put as much effort as I
could have into the shields.

Late Republican Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: March 21th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This is a character figure for my Roman Kings of War army. I decided to go with the
German helmetless head on this one to salvage a headless body I had kicking around. Unfortunately,
without the helmet it's tough to tell he's an officer... Oh well, I'm still happy with the character
of the figure!

Late Republican Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: March 21th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Two legionaries to place beside the DBA general's element to expand that out into a troop
of Romans, which can be combined with another troop to make a regiment. I am pretty happy with
these guys, and the the freehand shields weren't that tedious either!

Late Republican Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: March 21th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This Roman Legionary troop breaks from the previous DBA-effected basing I'd been using previously. Since the
DBA army was done, there was not need to split these guys. It's a big base, and I like it! More and more horses
free-hand here. But it wasn't too tedious.

Late Republican Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: March 21th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The fifth legion cohort for my Romans. This brings me up to effectively half a legion... Or, if I field these
as a century, then it brings me up to just over half of a cohort. I'v pretty happy with it.

Late Republican Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: March 14th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This base is the new DBA general's element, and the start of my fifth Roman regiment for
KoWHAC. The shield designs are freehand, and interestingly
I did them by mistake; I almost did a similar design for my other DBA elements, but decided it would be too much
work! I forgot to consider that this time around... But I like the colours and design; it was worth the effort.

Late Republican Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: March 14th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
These two Roman are going to be used to expand the two DBA elements with the same shield design
into a Kings of War regiment. They were easy enough to paint, but I still don't like that shield design all that much.

Late Republican Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: March 14th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Two more commant figs to expand the DBA elements into a regiment... I have four of these bases now.

Late Republican Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: March 14th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Here's the fourth Roman regiment, which is basically a cohort... or a half cohort... or whatever!

Ancient German Warriors  -  Posted: March 7th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
More Germans! I bought some figures of a buddy and picked some of these up in the lot,
which were great as they allowed me to expand my Germans into a Regiment for
KoWHAC. Overall I am very happy with
these figs. The Wargames Factory figs are actually very nice. This one even has a command
in it! Also, since it's 60mm by 30mm, I could easily use it as a DDBA general's element.

Ancient German Warrior  -  Posted: March 7th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This single guy is on a 40mm by 30mm base! Why? I will use it to expand my two
DBA elements into a KoWHAC regiment! I gave the fig an arms spread wide pose to increase his
presence! I'm happy with him and I like the fig.

Ancient Germans  -  Posted: March 7th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Here are all the Germans formed up in a Regiment for some
KoWHAC action. Note that the
40mm by 30mm base on the back left doubles as a Viking berzerker base to expand my
berzerker DBA element into a KoWHAC troop unit for my future Viking KoWHAC supplement.
Check out a detailed view of those guys in the swedish viking gallery.

Roman Cornicen and Signifer  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The first of a few 40mm by 30mm musician and banner bases to convert my DBA
Marian Romans to Kings of War Regiments. These are extras I had left over from the
pack of Wargames Factory figures that I used to build the DBA army a couple of years ago.

Roman Cornicen and Signifer  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Another command base. I was missing a single head, so I used a German head. I figured it could
be a great 'out on campaign' sorta look for the guy. I really like the feel of it.

Roman Cornicen and Signifer  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This is a bit of a cheat, not new figures at all, but taken of the
DBA Command element. I dismantled it,
but i plan to replace it so I can keep the DBA army!

Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Along with the command figures previously, I needed another single 40mm by 30mm base to
expand the two Roman DBA elements into a Kings of War regiment. Here are the first two with the branches
on their shields to match their two DBA counter-part elements.

Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The second base of Legionaries. These match two different DBA elements...

Roman Legionaries  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The third base of Legionaries to match the third set of DBA elements.

Roman Legionary Cohort  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Here's the Roman regiment all mustered together. It's 100mm by 60mm and should fit the Kings
of War regiment footprint nicely with only 12 figures. I'm happy with this one and the others!

Roman Legionary Cohort  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The second regoment or Legionaries. I will likely use these to represent an entire cohort, ten cohorts make
a legion. However I could actually use these in a 2:1 or 1:1 representation of a Roman Century, which was made up of
80 men by building them out to be a full four or eight regiments... Whatever scale you want!

Roman Legionary Cohort  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The final cohort for this group... This all worked out well so far!

Roman Legionary  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The single Legionary is the first figure towards the final DBA element regiment expansion.
After I finish the next three of these guys, I'll have four cohorts, or half a cohort depending on
your preferred scale!

Marc Anthony  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Taken from the DBA Command element
this is Marc Anthony and I'll use him as a hero for the Kings of War action!

Roman Aquilifer Standard Bearer  -  Posted: February 28th, 2011  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Another one taken from the DBA Command element.
This one will play the roll of the Aquilifer - the Legion's Eagle Bearer or Army Standard Bearer for Kings of War..

Ancient German Warriors  -  Posted: February 9th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Some ancient German auxiliaries for my Romans here... Yes, I know they should probably be in
Roman gear sans chain mail, but alas, I had them as they are and can't really use them for anything
else, so here we are. We know that Germans of this period were indeed in the Roman armies, so I don't
think it's too unrealistic. In any case, I am happy with the way these figs turned out for sure, although
I went a little darker with the skin tome than usual and I am not sure if it worked perfectly... Overall,
some nice figs from Wargames Factory!

Roman Centaurs  -  Posted: January 26th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory, Games Workshop conversion
After looking all over for some Roman centaurs, I couldn't find any; all the centaurs I could find
were Greek! So, I used some Lord of the Rings Riders of Rohan horses and some Wargames Factory Romans
to make these. I am extremely happy with how they turned out! With the possible exception of the shields, which
although they were blended really don't look all that great in the photo. They will add a lot of character to
my fantasy Roman army though!

Minerva, Roman Goddess  -  Posted: January 11th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: germes1968
Minerva, goddess of the warrior in Rome, among other things. She will be used as a camp for my
Romans, being a statue, for when they are fielded as a DBA army. She will come to life though if I field
this army as a Hordes of the Things Roman fantasy army. She is a nice figure... And I skimped on the base
decorations (no sculpted flowers or olive branches) and simply put her on a rock. What goddess wouldn't get up
on a giant rock given the opportunity? Pretty happy with her! No, the shield isn't freehand... She's so big - 54mm - that
the detail was sculpted on!

Minerva, Roman Goddess  -  Posted: January 11th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: germes1968
This is a close up of the head. She's quite striking; the sculptor did an excellent job with her.

Minerva, Roman Goddess  -  Posted: January 11th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: germes1968
Here's Minerva with her Roman legionaries ready to march into battle! She's quite large, especially up on that rock!
Surely no Roman Caesar or upstart general would stand against her!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: January 4th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
An image of the entire army arrayed for battle! It doesn't include all options
for the II/49 Marian Roman DBA army, but there are twelve elements, which is enough
to field the army. Overall, I am happy with the look of it.

Marian Romans  -  Posted: January 4th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This is the first of two elements that make up a legion that don't include
a battle diarama, or any bloodied or otherwise dead or injured figures. I wanted to
have at least one legion that was straight up the standard DBA/FoG element. These elements
have a 60mm frontage, and so you can see that four figures can fit nicely on them.
The elements have a 30mm depth, but you can see from the side view that there is some extra room back there
that could easily be shaved off!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: January 4th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The second element of the legion with the yellow shields and the boar icon. I am not
overly happy with the shield design to be honest. The boar sorta looks like a fluffy teddy
bear or something :) Oh well, it's not terrible.

Marian Romans  -  Posted: January 4th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The third legion all ranked up. You can see that the figures, even though they
are squished on bases with a 60mm frontage still line up well!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: January 4th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The first element of the fourth and final legion. Back to the dead theme, this one
features a downed legionary. The #1 rule in a fight is that if you go down, it's unlikely that
you will be getting up! Unfortunately, the dead guy makes this element look a little sparse, with
apparently only three figures on it... Oh well, it get's the message across! Also, I was quite happy
with this shield design. Originally it was going to be a scoprion motif, but after the failure
of the boar motif, I thought the geometric patterns were the way to go for Roman shields.

Marian Romans  -  Posted: January 4th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This one was a fun element to do. The stab to the throat action worked pretty well,
and I am pretty happy with the expression on the face of that poor soon-to-be-very-dead
Roman Centurion there. For these elements I changed the skin tone, but also the blood recipe.
I used a more purplish red, and started darker and I think it worked better overall.

Marian Romans  -  Posted: January 4th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The fourth and final legion for this Roman army! All lined up, I like the apparent action
in it. Pretty happy with these two elements.

Marian Romans  -  Posted: January 4th, 2010  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
As promised, here is a top view of the
element with the downed Roman that I posted back on November 9th. As you can see, the guy is
down, but not out yet, and so that pilum pointed down towards him definitely has a purpose!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 15th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
These are Numidian light horse mercenaries for the Marian Romans. Wargames factory
did a pretty good job with the figs, and they were pretty easy to paint up. Note that these
started their life as foot and were converted to cavalry (
see the greens starting here). No decals were used. Overall, I like the figs, but not as much
as I like their Roman figs...

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 15th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Here is the first element of Numidian skirmishers. Some nice figures here, I went with
a javelin and armour, including helmet and shield configuration. I am quite happy with these,
especially the shields!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 15th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
I really like slingers, and so I went with the slingers for this last element of Numidian
skirmishers. Overall I think the motion of the figures is pretty good, even though the arms and the
slings were separate and glued together. Still, it is tough to put a fluid and natural look to
figures that are so piece-meal... Still, I am quite happy with them!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 9th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This is the second element of Legionaries that I've finished, and it's shields match the first element
of legionaries that I did. I did some hand to hand combat on this element, with the opposing Roman legionary
about to take the sharp end of the pilum from his compromised position on the ground! I am pretty happy with
the look overall, and the civil war theme works I think. Note the shields are all freehand except the shield
of the downed legionary there, that's the LBMS decal that is included with the figures!...
How does the freehand compare to the decal?

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 9th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
This is the third element of legionaries, note the new shield design; my plan is to do a single legion per two
elements. Technically, four elements are about the size of a legion, but I wanted to paint more than two
different legion shield designs, but not a different one for each element, so I figured two was a good compromise!
I am very happy with this element, both painting and composition. The conversion there was super easy, and I think
the plastic figs allow simple but realistic battle dioramas to be made! Kudos to Wargames Factory for these figs,
and apparently this is their worst line!!! Believe it or not. As with the previous element, all the shields are
freehand except the stabbed legionary, which is a decal from those included with the figs.

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 9th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The fourth legionary element for the army. This one features all freehand shields and another with a soldier
catching a pilum through his chest... This will be the last pilum impact figure I do for the army I think, but
it works really well and animates the element. Overall I think the 'civil war' subtitle for the army is working
very well!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 9th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
So, aside from being a civil war theme, I have a sub-sub theme for the army: freehand vs. decals! Bascially,
each element with an enemy legionary soldier on it will have freehand shields on all figures except the
enemy figure, which will have the LBMS decals. So, you can compare and contrast, and see what's better, freehand
or decals! If my freehands 'win', then I promise to post hi-res pictures of all oy my shield designs so that
all of you aspiring generals can download them and print them on to your own transfer paper and make your own
decals with my freehand shield designs!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 9th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
So, as I said earlier, every two elements will represent a distinct legion. Here is the second legion
I've painted formed up. Overall I really like the effect of the line, and I think the action bits on the
elements really adds to the look! I am very happy with these.

Marian Romans  -  Posted: November 9th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
Here's the first legion that I dod, made up of two elements. Again I am very happy with it!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: October 29th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
My blade general for my 'Civil War' themed Marian Roman DBA army in 28mm! Thanks to Wargames
Factory's sale, myself and a few buddies picked up Marian Roman armies, and here's my general
element! I wanted a commander other than old Julius. After considering it, I opted to convert
one instead of buying one, and using an extra WF horse and command figure, this is what I came
up with. It's based on Mark Anthony from the Osprey Philipi 42BCE book, but it meant to
represent either Pompey or Brutus... Basically, any Roman commander who fought for the
republic and against Ceasar's empire! Overall, I am excited to continue work on this project!

Marian Romans  -  Posted: October 29th, 2009  -  Manufacturer: Wargames Factory
The first element of proper republican Roman legionaries. Overall I am very happy
with these figures. They are very easy to put together, super easy to make each one
distinct from the others, and very simple to convert. On this element I did only a single
conversion (the guy hit with the pilum, yes, a Roman hit with a Roman pilum! My favourite
enemy of Rome was Rome itself!) and it was trivial, but produced quite
a realistic effect I think. The shield design was stolen from a decal company's design, and
it's spiffy, makes the unit look quite striking. Overall, this 'civil war' army should be
fun to do! So for this one, the first lesson every Roman legionary should learn is: keep your
shield up!
